Garments

The garments area is an extremely important area of collection and documentation. Together with the area of home textiles, it accounts for approximately a quarter of the entire museum collection. In a multi-ethnic region such as Transylvania traditional costumes are important identifiers, especially festive costumes. Because of this, the significance of traditional costumes and parts of them not only lies in their sheer number. The children’s, ladies’ and men’s clothing for workdays and Sundays, for winter and summer, nicely demonstrates the development of these costumes, shows external influences and provides an overview of the respective products on offer at the time. Due to the fact that only a small portion of these garments were purchased or produced industrially, garments and home textiles greatly reflect the very broad mechanical skills of the women then. In addition to festive and everyday traditional costumes, the museum owns a collection of garments from different eras that were worn by all different ethnic groups alike. However, this part of the collection is yet to be completed. Besides the traditional costumes of Transylvanian-Saxon origin, the museum also houses festive costumes of the Hungarian, Romanian and Roma ethnic groups.

The fur coats worn at church (embroidered sheepskin coats) and the lambskin vests made by peltmongers represent another important category of the garment collection.
